7 Simple Steps for Beginner Vents©
"Vent" is an affectionate word used throughout the ventriloquist world as a term for those practicing the art. Ventriloquism is an act of "magic" that anyone from 4 to 94 can learn with a little practice and the right techniques. If you are truly interested in bringing your ThrowVoicePuppet to life, just follow these seven easy steps and very soon, you will find out just how much fun ventriloquism can be.
Step 1 How to Hold Your Mouth We suggest practicing this in front of a mirror. (Though, the key is to practice often and whenever you can.) Relax your mouth and part your lips slightly in a natural way. It should appear that your mouth is closed. Your top teeth should just barely be touching your bottom teeth. (No clenching... remember you have to relax.) You will always want your mouth to look closed, relaxed, and in a natural position whenever you are Throwing Your Voice.

Step 2 The Beginner's Alphabet Beginning Vents will need to begin with the 19 basic sounds of the alphabet. Thses are: A C D E G H I J K L O Q R S T U X Z. You must practice this using your mouth in a closed, (lips slightly separated) relaxed, natural position as described in Step 1. Get so that you can keep your lips absolutely still while making these sounds and saying the names of these letters.
Step 3 The Beginner's First Sentence The next 7 sounds of the alphabet are: B F M P V W Y. You will find that if you try to make these sounds you will be unable to keep your lips still. For now, you will have to substitute another sound for these letters. Try saying, "The Blue Ball is Bouncing in the Backyard." Now, with your mouth closed, (lips slightly separated) relaxed, with your teeth slightly together as in Step 1 say, "The Dlue Dall is Douncing in the Dackyard."
Step 4 Vents Say One Sound and Think Another Vents think of the letter B while they are saying the letter D. This takes lots of practice. If you sit in front of the mirror long enough (or even practice in your head) and THINK the letter D as B, you will be surprised at how soon the sound will be clear during normal conversation. It also helps to slur the D sound when using it to substitute for B. Remember to practice, practice, practice.
Step 5 Instead of F use a "TH" or "Eth" When a word starts with F use "th." Use "eth" when F comes in the middle or at the end of a word. Try this sentence, "If I undertake an Effort, I Find a Friendly Feeling." Using the mouth position in Step 1 say it, "Ith I undertake an Ethort, I thind a thriendly theeling."
Step 6 On to the Sounds of "M," "P," and "V" We now have to substitute M with N. Try saying, "My cousin Mary Makes Awesome Muffins." This one is pretty easy with all the practice you have had. Say the sentence, "Ny cousin Nary Nakes awesoNe Nuffins." Now we substitute P with T. Say, "The Pretty girl Plays the Piano." The sentence goes, "The Tretty girl Tlays the Tiano." Here we replace V with "The" or "th" Say, "Every Vicious dog is Vigilant." Vents say this sentence, "Ethery Thicious dog is thigilant."
Step 7 "W" and "Y" take a little more practice. Try saying "W" and it comes out "Duddle-you." That's not too difficult. Now try the word WISH, and it's impossible not to flutter your lips. Try substituting with an"OH" or just a deep outward breath. (An "L" will also work with some W sounds.) The word "wish" would sound like "ohish" or Lish. The same applies to the word for "Y" or "why." You would say "oheye" or "Leye." However, the only time you will use this is when you say the lettter "Y" itself. In normal speach, "Y" is pretty easy to say without moving your lips.
